  • Things are a-changing in movie distribution

Whether or not you agree with Michael Moore's movies, there should be one thing you have to respect about him. He's about to release a $2M movie he's produced out for free download. He's challenging the media distribution model. "This is being done entirely as a gift to my fans. The only return any of us are hoping for is the largest turnout of young voters ever at the polls in November." – Michael Moore You can sign up to be notified when the movie is made available...

  • A Comparison of 3 Personal Media Players

You might be asking what a Personal Media Player is. It's basically an MP3 player, but also includes capabilities for playing back video files. The market for this type of device exploded last year when Apple came out with new versions of their iPod and Nano players. At the time there were other vendors supplying the market with video players, but Apple brought it to the mainstream. I've had experience with 2 models of recent portable media players and will be getting a 3rd. The current information...
  • Universal Studios "gets it" in the UK

Today Universal Studios UK announced that they'd soon allow consumers to download DVD movies over the internet . "It gives instant access, it gives portability and it gives much greater flexibility for the consumer to consume his product any way they want," said Universal Pictures UK Chairman Eddie Cunningham. Universal Pictures is part of General Electric's NBC Universal unit. Hollywood studios have been reluctant to sell digital versions of their blockbusters for fear they would be copied and pirated...

  • Why current implementations of DRM suck for digital music

I've upgraded my machine again (you'll see more on this in a later article/post where I talk about my experiences with some cool new hardware) and had to migrate my files over to the new machine from the old machine. I was a bit surprised when I tried to play my MP3s and found a few songs that woudn't play. When I checked, I realized that these were WMA files that I'd purchased from PeerImpact and MSN Music . I purcased these songs from these services through some free coupons received with the purchase...

  • AllOfMP3.com - Now THAT's a price point!

Okay, so I've been listening to the TWiT ( This Week in Tech ) podcast on my drive to and from work over the last couple weeks. On episode 24 , from September 25th, where they talked about iTunes song pricing... and also mentioned a site " AllOfMP3.com ". The reason I even mention another online MP3 site is that the per song prices on this site are cheap. Really cheap. As an example, for Cheryl Crowe's most recent album "Wildflower" that was released a few weeks ago is up on the site, and the total...

  • My music, on my devices, on my time...

Relating to a post by Russ Nemhauser about how it seems that everyone who's legitimately selling music online seems to unfairly limit its use: Shouldn't I be able to buy a song from ANY vendor and play it on ANY device? Even if I have to put a password in I'm happy to do that. I've never understood why it's so important to Microsoft to proliferate the WMA format. MP3 is pretty great. In fact, I rip all my CDs as MP3s, not WMAs because virtually every portable device can play MP3 files. What's the...

  • Movie Review: Wedding Crashers (4/5)

We went out on Friday night to see Wedding Crashers. It was fricken hilarious! I really liked Vince Vaughn in just about everything I've seen him in. I think that he and Owen Wilson make a good comedy pair. Thought not as much as Vince Vaughn and Ben Stiller. =8)...

  • Movie Review: War of the Worlds (4/5)

So I went out and watched War of the Worlds on Thursday. This is a sci-fi horror movie. There are several freak-out moments in the movie that were well done, as well as some real "holy crap" moments like the “fire train“. They've taken more license with an adaptation of the original H G Wells story by playing out a story of Cruise on the run with his family. Count on Spielberg to run with that. Cruise's character has 2 kids, a teen boy and a little girl. The girl is played by Dakota Fanning , the...

  • Movie Review: Constantine (4/5)

So we went out and saw this on Saturday. It was pretty good. There were some unfortunate storyline and character elements that prevented this from being good. (Keep in mind, I mark hard!) The casting of the devil was at best, unfortunate. The actor, Peter Stormare, is someone you've probably seen before in many movies and some TV shows. He just wasn't evil enough... when I see him I think “homeless guy“, not “the Devil“. ......

  • I see the old police box will be doing the rounds again!

Look who's coming back ? I was introduced to Dr. Who in my teens through late night KVOS TV and was hooked. It's the kind of SciFi that you wouldn't watch for the special effects, but rather for the creative and interesting stories told. I've since thought that this is a mythos that could do really well if it had resources to raise the production quality bar. It looks like they may be doing this soon on BBC1 in the UK. Here's a teaser (RealVideo).

  • X-Prize and NASA

SpaceShipOne has Ansari X Prize for 2 manned flights within 2 weeks (they did their 2nd flight within 6 days). Watch NASAs archived web cast of the first flight here , skip to about 2 hrs in to see the launch. Todays 2nd flight is archived here . Both launches took place at the Mojave Space Port . (Yes, that's not sci-fi anymore... we have an actual space port!) This is a truly great accomplishment as a privately funded, relatively inexpensive development (Paul Allen's investment has been estimated...

  • Canada wins hockey world cup!

Canada has won! Woo hooo! It was a good game, though there was a little deja-vu all over again at the beginning with the back and forth goals from each team.
