  • Movie Review: Van Helsing (2004)

I saw this one on Sunday night, after my unfulfilling Friday night experience with Troy. I probably should have waited for this one to come out on Video. It's got Kate Beckinsale in it, and I liked her from Underworld (must be the cat suit!), so I had some hopes for her here. It's also got Hugh Jackman , and I like him as a skinnier representation of Wolverine, so I had some expectations for him here as well. Kate Beckinsales attempt at a Romanian accent just ruined the scene whenever she was talking...

  • Movie Review: Troy (2004)

It's rare that I'll actually go out and watch a movie on opening night. I did do it for Troy , however. Probably the reason I did this time is because Cindy says “it's got Brad Pitt and Orlando Bloom in it!“. Well it should have some good fight scenes, right? Well, it's got fight scenes... L et's get this out of the way early. I wasn't very happy with the movie. This is a cheezy Hollywood-fluff movie full of Hollywood cliches. There weren't any memorable performances from the cast, except for perhaps...

  • TV on Demand... the way I want it!

So some people download video on the internet, you might have heard about them. I'm one of them! The video I download most often is video of TV episodes that I've missed. I get these shows on the channels I watch on my own cable, but I find myself busy more often than not, and am not able to watch them when they're on TV. So I go to Kazaa , BitTorrent , or DirectConnect . Do a search for the name of the TV show, and if I'm lucky someone has already captured and encoded it. The problem here is that...

  • 400GB SATA 7200RPM drive for $400US

Hitachi's deskstar 7K400 ($400) is the new king of big: The 7200-rpm Serial ATA hard drive comes with an 8MB buffer and a staggering 400GB of storage. The reasonably priced drive, available now, also features improved digital-media handling capabilities. In our tests it performed exceptionally well on standard desktop applications, too....

  • Yahoo - "The Death of Bluetooth: Intel Moves to Ultrawideband"

Yahoo - "The Death of Bluetooth: Intel Moves to Ultrawideband" I was never a particular fan of Bluetooth. While it was an interesting concept, adoption of it never really took off. I think the major limitation for this technology was speed. The low bandwidth option limited it to applications such as using your cell phone as a cordless modem on through your laptop. Increasing the bandwidth to speeds such as USB2 or Firewire would make the technology really useful for things like portable hard drives...

  • Real coders, real code...

Just read a great blog post on the coding mentality... That's totally where I come from, and I know many of you do too. It's a good read. Wait a sec! What are you doing reading blogs? Shouldn't YOU be coding?

  • Movie Review: Kill Bill vol 2

I agree with most of the reviews, it is slower than vol1 with less action and focuses more on character development. To be fair, it's not Kill Bill vol 1, and wasn't meant to be. This one though was a bit different in a key way. It was cheezier . It had several nods to kung-fu movies of old, which was cute, and I think is a bit of an inside joke for people who grew up watching "Kung Fu" the TV series. Unless you're a huge fan of Quentin, or David Carradine, or Uma -- you may want to wait to rent...

  • Perforce - free 2 user license

So as soon as I found out that you can get Perforce source control for 2 users for free, I downloaded and installed it. I found that I could switch to a second client that has a working folder located on the remote server and sync files to that server directly, but this doesn't work well for mixed solutions that have web components and non-web components. This is one big way that I think SourceSafe worked much better than Perforce. SourceSafe would allow you to define a working folder per project...
  • Had some trouble

I had some trouble getting the .Text 0.95 source configured, and also had a problem getting the source project solution to compile successfully. The project would generate errors during the build because the /Admin folder would fail when trying to copy the .Text framework DLL to the .Text bin directory. The problem seems to be that the admin project shares the same /bin folder as the main site. Hmm. That seems to be a bit tricky. The server seemed to lock the shared DLLs. When I figure this out,...
  • First Post!

First post!. I was looking for an alternative to my previous web application I was using to publish my mental meanderings and found .Text. .Text (”dot-text”) is actually a blogging web application. I picked .Text after I realized that what I actually was doing was blogging, but without a tool that would properly support blogging. I selected .Text because: The author provides both binaries and source for the application. There are apparently 1000's of weblogs that use .Text Active support...
