    Adventures in HD

Now that I have a HDTV ( LC-46D82U ) and HD programming via Shaw , I've noticed that the quality of the HD broadcast varies from channel to channel and in some cases program to program. For example, not all HD programs are created equally. The CTV National News for example is very clear and detailed, but most ABC, CBS and Fox programming in HD shows evidence of image artifacts due to compression. I'm not talking about a little noise either... it's enough noise to be distracting. Technorati Tags:...

A Comparison of 3 Personal Media Players

You might be asking what a Personal Media Player is. It's basically an MP3 player, but also includes capabilities for playing back video files. The market for this type of device exploded last year when Apple came out with new versions of their iPod and Nano players. At the time there were other vendors supplying the market with video players, but Apple brought it to the mainstream. I've had experience with 2 models of recent portable media players and will be getting a 3rd. The current information...

Upgrade to CommunityServer 2007.1 and now using Live Writer Beta

I've upgraded the site to CS 2007.1 .  The upgrade was pretty painless... copy some  files, run an sql script.  Voila!  Updated! Also, this is the first post I've made using the latest version of Windows Live Writer .  It's been updated to be part of the windows Live package which contains desktop search, photo gallery tool , Live Messenger and Live Mail Desktop . Upgraded to CommunityServer 2007 (v3.0)

I've upgraded the site to CS 2007 and am trying out a few new visual themes from the recent CS2007 theme contest . I'm also considering elimination of the "single blog configuration" I've been using for CommunityServer because of the amount of effort it requires each time there's a new upgrade to CS I need to install. If I get rid of the single blog config, it means that any existing links out there to my old configured site will no longer work. Therein lies the crappy choice... Fortunately in CS2007...

Part 2 of 2: ATI, you are dead to me.

Remember what I said on my previous post : Don't buy ATI. If you manage to get your drivers installed ( see previous post again ), and your software is up and running, then count yourself lucky. Don't ever touch that card, think about updating it's drivers, or even look at it sideways. You'll regret it. ATI Support Sucks If you do end up having any problems with it, you can pretty much count yourself *** out of luck because ATI support either wont, or can't help you. Basically, you cannot get anything...

Part 1 of 2: ATI, you are dead to me.

Don't buy ATI. For pretty much the last decade I've used both ATI and NVidia graphics products in the home PC systems I've built. Over the years my choice of which company's card I've used was the one that had the current fastest graphics card for 3D gaming. I've also used ATI for their TV tuner cards - these are provided as either an add-on "TV Wonder card", or integrated with your main video card as the "All In Wonder". ATI is a company that has such a poor driver install experience that a cottage...

    Got Battlefield 2?

This is the primary game I've been playing for the last several months on-line. Battlefield 2 by EA . There's a built in ranking system that tracks every last detail of your play online and it's made available for others to view and compare. Check out this page which contains an image of some key metrics, as well as a link to the excruciatingly high detail stats. Geeqs.Net.BF2Query

I play Battlefield 2 a lot these days and have joined a BF2 clan called Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) . One of the things we'd like to do is have a quick way to see who's on our BF2 server just by hitting your clan sites main page. This helps so that you don't have to fire up BF2 to see if there are people on a server worth playing against. There didn't seem to be any free tools out there that would allow you to easily add such a listing to your own site. There are plenty of sites that specialize in...

My New Server - Shuttle SN21G5 - Silence is golden!

Usually when I get a new desktop PC, I'll delegate my home server duties to the PC I'm replacing. During my last PC upgrade I'd decided that my existing server system was just fine for what it needs to do, so I saved myself the hassle of doing a reinstall and migration of all the services from the old server. What I didn't expect was that when I got my new system set up, which was configured for speed and silence (see previous post) I realized just how noisy my old server system was. I've realized...

Upgrade Your Computer Often? Don't Buy Vista...

Why? Well let me tell you a little story first. I upgrade my personal PC quite often. Every few months I may add a little something like more memory, an upgraded video card, sound card, DVD writer. Every 12 to 18 months I'll replace something more significant like the CPU or motherboard. It's these last two items that are going to cause a problem. It's also these last two items that PC enthusiasts will change often enough that they will be required to purchase a brand new copy of Vista...

Test Post from Windows Live Writer

I'm just testing out the Windows Live Writer application. The WYSIWYG editors that CommunityServer provides is good, but it doesn't compare to the rich interface that Microsoft Word provides. Windows Live Writer seems to promise more of the Word experience and less of the manual HTML editing that's usually required to write a well formatted post. Here's an excerpt from the download page . Windows Live Writer is a desktop application that makes it easier to compose compelling blog...
